MEET BINTI

Hi, My name is Binti.

I am 14 years old, and live in Tanzania, I go to school and I want to go to university one day. My dream is to be an Engineer and build roads and bridges across my beautiful country and beyond, across Africa.

My dream will only come true if my parents let me finish school and help me grow and be everything I am meant to be.

Child marriage is still too common in Tanzania and it destroys the dreams of so many bintis. Join me to raise awareness to help the laws in our land change for better.

For every girl like me

Talk Soon,

Binti

Why this Campaign

Child marriage deprives bintis of education, opportunities and access to health and protection. It keeps them in poverty, and makes them vulnerable to domestic violence and sexually transmitted infections. Child marriage increases the risk of deaths to the underage mother and her baby.

Why #EndChildMarriage in Tanzania?

  • Child marriage ends childhood and negatively impacts childrens rights to education, health, and protection.
  • Children married off before the age of 18 are more likely to drop out of school and lack the skills to earn money to support their families or contribute to the community.
  • Child brides are exposed to a higher likelihood of domestic violence and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV & AIDS.
  • Child brides give birth to children with a higher risk of dying due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Child marriage negatively impacts the Tanzanian economy and creates even more pathways to an inter-generational cycle of poverty.

Why Now?

  • Child marriage ends childhood and negatively impacts childrens rights to education, health, and protection.
  • Children married off before the age of 18 are more likely to drop out of school and lack the skills to earn money to support their families or contribute to the community.
  • Child brides are exposed to a higher likelihood of domestic violence and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV & AIDS.
  • Child brides give birth to children with a higher risk of dying due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

What to do?

  • Join the #EndChildMarriage awareness campaign: Sign the pledge at binti.tz!
  • Talk to your family and friends to make a commitment not to participate in a child marriage and then sign the pledge.
  • Discuss the issue in your school/work/religious and youth groups or other social spaces you belong to online and offline.
  • Ask your traditional and religious leader or head of your association or institution to join the campaign and speak up against child marriage using their own platforms .
  • Report cases of child marriage in your communities to the appropriate authorities.

Did you know?

  • Tanzania ranks 11th in the world for the number of child marriages.
  • 6,500 girls dropped out of school in Tanzania in 2020 alone due to pregnancy.
  • More than 3 out of 10 young women in Tanzania got married when they were children.
  • The recent judgment by both the High and Appeal courts made it illegal to give girls under 18 years of age out in marriage.
